Comparative is the name   for the grammar used when comparing two things. The two basics ways to compare are using as ... as or than...


Comparative is the name for the grammar used when comparing two things. The two basics ways to compare are using as ... as or than. 

she is twice as tall as your sister.
I'm almost as good at maths as in science.

When comparing with as ...as the adjective does not change. When comparing with than, some changes are necessary, depending on the adjective.

1-syllable adjectives: add -er to the adjective

My sister is older than me.
It is colder today than it was yesterday.

If the adjective ends in consonant-vowel-consonant, the last consonant  is usually doubled in the comparative. 

big-bigger
fat-fatter
hot-hotter

2-syllable adjectives ending in -y change the -y to  -ier

This grammar topic is easier than the last one.
They look happier than yesterday.

Other 2-syllable adjectives use more with the unchanged adjective.

My mother is more careful with her writing than I am.
The school is more crowded nowadays than it was years ago.

The comparative of some shorter 2-syllable adjectives can be formedwith -er: simple-simpler, clever-cleverer, narrow-narrower.

Adjectives with 3  or more syllables use more with the unchanged adjective

Russian grammar is more difficult than English grammar.
The older you get, the more reasonable you become.

The Superlative is used for comparing one person or thing with every other member of the group. You do not compare 2 things. 

1-syllable adjectives add -est to the adjective ( plus the).


My father is the tallest in our family.

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far.

2-syllable adjectives ending in -y change the -y to  -iest (plus the)
